Definition
Robotics is the interdisciplinary science and technology of designing, constructing, operating and using robots. Robots are machines that can be programmed to perform a wide variety of tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously.
Background
The term robotics comes from the word “robot,” which was first used in the play “R.U.R.” published in 1920 (Rossum's Universal Robots) by Czech author Karel Čapek was used. In recent decades, robotics has evolved from mere fiction to one of the fastest-growing areas of technology, driven by advances in artificial intelligence, sensor technology, and materials science.
Areas of application
Robotics is used in a wide range of areas. In industry, robots are used to automate manufacturing processes, such as in automotive production, electronics assembly and food processing. Other areas of application include medicine (e.g. surgical robots), agriculture (e.g. harvesters), construction and even entertainment (e.g. interactive toys).
