Make your website barrier-free!
Meet the requirements of the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) and improve the accessibility of your digital offerings for all users.
Time is short!
On July 22, 2021, the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) was published in the Federal Law Gazette. This law obliges companies to make their products and services barrier-free from June 28, 2025. This applies not only to websites, but also to web portals, mobile apps, B2B portals and other digital offerings. Companies that have not made their digital offerings barrier-free by 2025 not only risk fines, but also lose access to millions of potential customers. 7.8 million people live in Germany with a recognized severe disability (as of the end of 2021). With an accessible website, a barrier-free web portal or an accessible mobile app, you secure access to these customers and enable everyone to use your services and products without restrictions.
Hard facts about the implementation of the BFSG
The BFSG comes into force on June 28, 2025 and affects all companies that offer digital products and services.
Computers, smartphones, ATMs, television sets with Internet access and more must be made barrier-free.
The requirements are regulated by an ordinance drawn up by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in cooperation with other ministries. Guidelines provide companies with valuable assistance in implementing them.
E-books, telephone services, messenger services and banking services are among the services that must be offered barrier-free.
What is accessibility?
Accessibility means that websites are designed so that they can be used by everyone — including people with disabilities. This includes aspects such as:
High-contrast colors, scalable font sizes, and screen reader compatibility.
Subtitles for videos and text alternatives for audio content.
Navigability without a mouse, e.g. by keyboard control.
Clear and understandable content, easy navigation, and consistent layout.

Legal basis for digital accessibility

When is a website barrier-free?
A website, a web portal or a mobile app is barrier-free if it can be used by all people, regardless of possible restrictions when seeing, hearing, moving or processing information. This means that people with visual disabilities, deaf people and people with motor disabilities can use the digital offerings without difficulty.
Specific barriers include:

visual impairment
Texts or form fields that stand out poorly from the background.
hearing disabilities
Missing subtitles in videos.

Blind people
Missing text descriptions of images, forms, and buttons.
